2026 IonLab/Sophion Workshop: Towards Automated Patch-Clamp Electrophysiology of Immune Cells

October 23, 12-6PM NYU Langone Health, New York, NY

Organizers: Soomin C. Song, PhD (IonLab, NYULH) and Patric Vaelli, PhD (Sophion Bioscience)

The IonLab at NYU Langone Health will host a one-day workshop on ion channel electrophysiology and automated patch-clamp technologies on October 23, 2026, in collaboration with Sophion Bioscience.

Program

12:00 – 2:00 PM | Scientific Session

Short research presentations (~15 minutes each) by invited speakers:

  • Murali Prakriya – CRAC channels
  • Zhaozhu Qiu – VRAC currents
  • Bimal Desai – TRPM7 and mitochondrial calcium signaling
  • Shivashankar Othy – Piezo1 and CRAC signaling in immune cells
  • Axel Concepcion – LRRC8 and AE2 channels/transporters

Overview of IonLab and the QPatch II platform by Dr. Song and Dr. Vaelli

Lunch and informal discussion

2:00 – 4:00 PM | Technology Demonstration

Hands-on demonstration of the QPatch II automated patch-clamp system in IonLab

4:00 – 5:30 PM | Discussion Session

Informal discussion on experimental approaches, collaborations, and future directions

The workshop will feature short scientific talks, an IonLab/QPatch2 platform overview, a hands-on demonstration session, and structured discussions aimed at technical improvements and collaborative development. This workshop will be highly technical in focus, centered specifically on the methodology and technical aspects of current measurements, electrophysiology workflows, data quality, and platform optimization.

Additional workshop participants will be selected through an application process. Because of space limitations, the number of participants will be limited.

Applicants should submit:

  • A brief statement of interest
  • A short description of their background or research related to ion channels, electrophysiology, or immune cell biology

New Insights into the Role of Channels and Transporters in Immunity
Thursday, 4/16/2026 8:00:00 AM – 9:30:00 AM Room: 104C | Thomas M. Menino Convention & Exhibition Center | Boston, MA Sponsoring Society: Society of General Physiologists (SGP) Chair: Stefan Feske, MD – New York University Grossman School of Medicine Co-chair: Adriana Mantegazza, PhD – Thomas Jefferson University
  • Axel Concepcion, PhD (University of Chicago): The bicarbonate transporter SLC4A2 orchestrates T cell development and function
  • Bimal Desai, PhD (University of Virginia): Mitochondrial Calcium Signaling in Age-associated Inflammation
  • Zhaozhu Qiu, PhD (Johns Hopkins University): Tuning Innate Immune Signaling Through Ion Channels: Regulation of cGAMP–STING by Puromycin-Sensitive Aminopeptidase
  • Adriana Mantegazza, PhD (Thomas Jefferson University): The nucleoside transporter SLC29a3 supports phagosomal TLR signaling and TRPML1 activity in dendritic cells
This guest symposium will highlight cutting-edge research on ICTs, exploring their roles in inflammation, autoimmunity, allergy, sepsis, antitumor immunity, and infection. By uncovering how these channels and transporters regulate immune cell function, the session will also emphasize their potential as accessible targets for new therapies. https://immunology2026.aai.org/ View Past Agenda/
